Phillies claim Ezequiel Carrera off waivers

Outfielder Ezequiel Carrera was claimed off waivers today by the Phillies from the Cleveland Indians, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Phillies have designated outfielder Ender Inciarte for assignment.

Carrera, 25, hit .272 while scoring 20 runs in 48 games last season with the Indians after being called up by Cleveland on August 3. He also appeared in 68 games for Cleveland in 2011.

Last season with triple-A Columbus, Carrera hit .294 with 65 runs, 19 doubles, 6 triples and 26 stolen bases in 97 games. He also had a 20-game hitting streak from July 12-30 during which he hit .407 and was named Player of the Week by the International League, July 23-29.

A native of Guiria, Venezuela, Carrera hit .279 in big league camp this spring, with 11 stolen bases and a .367 on-base percentage in 20 games.

Carrera will be in uniform for tomorrow night's game in Atlanta.
