Padres conclude 2013 Draft by selecting 30 players on third day

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today selected 30 players on the third and final day of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft. Vice President/Assistant General Manager of Player Personnel Chad MacDonald made the announcement.

"I'm proud of the job that Scouting Director Billy Gasparino and his area scouts and cross-checkers did," said MacDonald. "This is a draft class that we can be proud of for many years to come."

>During the three-day First Year Player Draft, the Padres drafted 4 catchers, 10 infielders (2 1B, 1 2B, 7 SS), and 5 outfielders. San Diego selected outfielder Hunter Renfroe from Mississippi State (13th overall) with their first pick the 2013 draft. Of the 19 position players selected, 6 are left-handed hitters and 1 is a switch-hitter. San Diego selected 27 college players and 14 high school players. The Padres took position players with the first three picks and five of the first six. San Diego selected right-handed pitchers with seven of their last nine selections.

 

In all San Diego selected players from 19 states: Alabama (2), Arizona (1), California (5), Florida (4), Georgia (1), Idaho (1), Indiana (1), Kentucky (2), Louisiana (2), Mississippi (1), New Jersey (1), New York (1), North Carolina (2), Ohio (1), Oklahoma (1), Tennessee (1), Texas (7), Virginia (2), Washington (3); 2 countries & one U.S. territory: United States (39), Canada (1) and Guam (1).

San Diego selected 22 pitchers in the draft, including 11 of their final 16 picks. The Padres selected 17 right-handed pitchers and 5 left-handed pitchers. RHP Bryan Verbitsky (3rd round) from Hofstra University was the first college pitcher selected by the Padres, while right-handed pitcher Adrian De Horta (8th round) from South Hills High School (CA) was the first high school pitcher drafted by San Diego. In all, 18 of the 22 pitchers selected by San Diego were college pitchers.

Padres second round pick Dustin Peterson is the brother of D.J. Peterson who was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the first round (12th overall).

Padres 24th round pick Marcus Davis has had his 2009 Midland Redskins jersey on display at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. The Hall of Fame requested a Midland jersey and hat to outfit a mannequin and a team photo of the 2009 Connie Mack national championship team.

Padres 35th round pick Taylor Blair is the son of former Major League pitcher and current Padres bullpen coach Willie Blair. He was a Rawlings Central Region Honorable Mention. Blair has committed to play at Eastern Kentucky.

The Padres selected eight players (rounds 3-10) on Friday after making three selections on Thursday, the first day of the First Year Player draft.
