The Oakland Athletics have acquired third baseman Vinnie Catricala from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for a player to be named later or cash, the team announced today.

Catricala, 24, was on the Mariners' 40-man roster before being designated for assignment June 2. The 6-3, 220-pound Sacramento native was batting .253 (44-for-174) with eight doubles, three home runs and 21 RBI in 48 games with Double-A Jackson, Miss. this season.

A graduate of Jesuit High School in Carmichael, Calif., Catricala was selected in the 10th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His best minor league season thus far came in 2011, when he combined for 48 doubles, 25 home runs and 106 RBI in 133 games with Single-A High Desert and Double-A Jackson.
