A's agree to terms with 25 players from First-Year Player Draft

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland A's agreed to terms with 25 players from the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, the club announced today. The players include left-handed pitcher Chris Kohler (supplemental after 3rd round, Los Osos HS), right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey (4th round, San Diego), outfielder Tyler Marincov (8th, North Florida), left-handed pitcher Matt Stalcup (9th, Pittsburg State), left-handed pitcher Jerad Grundy (10th, Kentucky), right-handed pitcher Louis Trivino (11th, Slippery Rock), right-handed pitcher Dakota Freese (12th, Des Moines Area CC), outfielder Justin Higley (13th, Cal State Sacramento), right-handed pitcher Junior Mendez (16th, Southern New Hampshire), outfielder Jaycob Brugman (17th, Brigham Young), right-handed pitcher Samuel Bragg (18th, Georgia Perimeter College), center fielder Scott Masik (21st, Cal State Los Angeles), right-handed pitcher Trevor Bayless (22nd, San Diego), catcher Josh Miller (23rd, South Carolina-Aiken), right-handed pitcher Kevin Johnson (24th, Illinois), right-handed pitcher Jonathan Massad (25th, Southern New Hampshire), catcher Kyle Wheeler (26th, Belhaven), first baseman Ryan Huck (27th, Western Kentucky), second baseman Joseph Bennie (28th, East Stroudsburg), right-handed pitcher Blake McMullen (29th, Science & Arts of Oklahoma), center fielder Benjamin McQuown (30th, Campbell), right-handed pitcher A.J. Burke (31st, Western Oregon State), right-handed pitcher Dominique Vattuone (32nd, UNC-Greensboro), right-handed pitcher Joseph Michaud (33rd, Bryant), third baseman Austin Kubala (34th, Arlington County Day School).

Kohler was 11-1 with a 2.24 ERA in 12 starts as a senior for Los Osos HS. He struck out 113 batters in 72.0 innings while holding the opposition to a .201 batting average. Covey logged a 5-4 mark and a 5.05 ERA in 18 games, 16 starts, for the Torreros. He yielded just two home runs in 76.2 innings. Marincov hit .331 with eight home runs and 54 RBI in 59 games with North Florida to earn All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors. He also walked 34 times for a .420 on-base percentage and was successful in 21 of 23 stolen base attempts. Stalcup posted a 7-4 record with three complete games and a 3.91 ERA in 14 games, 12 starts, for Pittsburg State. He struck out 95 batters in 71.1 innings and ranked among the NCAA Division II leaders in strikeouts per nine innings (11.99). Grundy went 6-6 with a 4.86 ERA as a senior at Kentucky. The A's were the fourth team to draft him over the last five years.
