Mariners recall first baseman Justin Smoak from rehab assignment and activate him from 15-day disabled list

INF Alex Liddi optioned to AAA Tacoma.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager Jack Zduriencik announced today the following roster moves:

  • INF Justin Smoak recalled from rehabilitation assignment at AAA Tacoma & activated from 15-day Disabled List.
  • INF Alex Liddi optioned to AAA Tacoma.

Smoak will join the team today in Los Angeles and will be available for tonight's (7:05 pm PT) game at the Los Angeles Angels.

Smoak was placed on the 15-day disabled list June 2, retroactive to May 30, with a strained right oblique muscle. He began his rehabilitation assignment with AAA Tacoma on June 13. He had hits in four of the five games he played with the Rainiers, including going 2-for-5 with a double and one run scored last night. Overall, he was 5-for-21 (.238) during his rehab stint.

Smoak, 26, originally left the game on May 25 vs. Texas with the oblique strain. He last appeared in a game as a pinch-hitter on May 29 at San Diego. In 46 games this season, Smoak is hitting .240 (37x154) with 7 doubles, 3 home runs and 8 RBI.

Liddi, 24, was recalled from Tacoma on May 29. He appeared in 8 games with Seattle, including making four starts at first base. Liddi collected his only hit on June 9 vs. New York, a double.
