Padres reinstate INF Everth Cabrera from 15-day DL and option RHP Burch Smith to Triple-A Tucson

The San Diego Padres today announced they have reinstated infielder Everth Cabrera from the 15-day disabled list and have optioned right-handed pitcher Burch Smith to Triple-A Tucson. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.

Cabrera, 26, was placed on the disabled list on June 19, retroactive to June 17, with a strained left hamstring, missing the Padres last 17 games. The switch-hitter made two starts at shortstop for Single-A Fort Wayne during a minor league rehab assignment, going 0-for-7 with a walk and a run scored. In 69 games for San Diego this season, is hitting .305 (84-for-275) with 11 doubles, four triples, four home runs, 24 RBI, 37 runs scored, a .382 on-base percentage, .418 slugging percentage, .800 OPS and a National League-leading 31 stolen bases. He is leading the Padres this year in average, hits, runs scored and stolen bases.

Smith, 23, has gone 0-1 with an 11.37 ERA (16 ER, 12.2 IP) and 15 strikeouts against seven walks and five home runs allowed in six games, three starts, for San Diego this season, his first Big League campaign. The right-hander was recalled for his third stint with the Padres on June 28. Over 11 starts between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tucson this year, Smith went 4-3 with a 1.82 ERA (12 ER, 59.1 IP) and 63 strikeouts against just 14 walks and 44 hits allowed.
