Marlins to wear 1956 Miami Marlins uniforms in Negro League tribute game tomorrow

Team will recognize Hall-of-Fame Pitcher Satchel Paige

MILWAUKEE – The Miami Marlins will wear reproductions of uniforms from the 1956 Miami Marlins tomorrow, July 20, at Miller Park against the Milwaukee Brewers, who are hosting a Negro Leagues Tribute.

The 1956 Miami Marlins, who played their home games at Miami Stadium, were a triple-A team in the International League. The Marlins’ uniforms tomorrow will feature a patch with the #29, the number worn by Hall-of Fame pitcher Satchel Paige during his three-year stint, from 1956-58, with the Marlins near the end of his career.

The Brewers will wear reproductions of uniforms worn by the 1923 Milwaukee Bears, from the Negro National League.

Paige was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971, becoming the first player to be inducted based upon his Negro League career. He played in the Negro Leagues from 1926-1947, including nine seasons with the Kansas City Monarchs, leading the Monarchs to the Negro League World Series Championship in 1942. In 1948, Paige became the Majors oldest rookie and the first black pitcher in the American League, pitching for the Cleveland Indians at age 42. Later that year, Paige also became the first black pitcher to pitch in the World Series. During his Major League career, Paige pitched for Cleveland (1948-49) and St. Louis-AL (1951-53), making the All-Star team in 1952 and 1953. He also made a one-game appearance with the Kansas City A’s in 1965.
