D-backs Place Montero On 15-Day Disabled List

Option Roe To Reno, Recall Spruill From Reno and Select Gosewisch From Reno

The Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) have placed catcher Miguel Montero (@miggymont26) on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain retroactive to July 29, optioned right-handed pitcher Chaz Roe to Triple-A Reno, recalled right-handed pitcher Zeke Spruill (@zekespruill) from Reno and selected the contract of catcher Tuffy Gosewisch (GOES-wish) (@santiagoeswisch) from Reno, according to D-backs' Executive Vice President & General Manager Kevin Towers. Additionally, left-handed pitcher Joe Thatcher, who was acquired yesterday, has reported to the club.

Montero, 30, was hitting .228 (74-for-325) with 11 doubles, 9 home runs and 34 RBI in 92 games with Arizona this season. He ranked second in MLB with 796.1 innings caught, trailing only St. Louis' Yadier Molina (804.1).

Over 8 Major League seasons with the D-backs (2006-present), Montero is batting .268 (655-for-2440) with 146 doubles, 82 home runs and 368 RBI. He is the franchise's all-time leader as catcher in home runs (78), RBI (351), games caught (683) and innings caught (5,694.0).

Roe, 26, was 1-0 with a 5.79 ERA (3 ER in 4.2 IP) in 4 relief appearances with the D-backs in 2013. He was recalled from Reno on July 28 and pitched 1.0 inning on July 30 @ Tampa Bay (1 ER).

Spruill, 23, combined to go 4-6 with a 2.68 ERA (31 ER in 104.0 IP) in 17 starts with Triple-A Reno and Double-A Mobile this season. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 5 starts, going 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA (31.2 IP).

Spruill, who is scheduled to make his first Major League start tonight, has gone 42-39 with 1 save and a 3.45 ERA (262 ER in 684.0 IP) in 121 games (112 starts) in 6 Minor League seasons with the Braves (2008-12) and D-backs (2013).

Gosewisch, 29, hit .285 (65-for-228) with 19 doubles, 6 home runs and 30 RBI in 66 games with the Aces in 2013. He was named to the Pacific Coast League midseason All-Star Team and led the league with a 51.2 caught stealing percentage (21-for-41).

Gosewisch is a career .238 (590-for-2476) hitter with 159 doubles, 51 home runs and 300 RBI in 9 Minor League seasons with the Phillies (2005-12), Blue Jays (2012) and D-backs (2013).

Gosewisch, who will wear No. 54 in his Major League debut, is a 2001 graduate of Horizon High School in Phoenix and attended Arizona State University from 2002-05. He signed with the D-backs as a Minor League free agent on Nov. 4, 2012.

Thatcher will wear No. 57.

The D-backs 40-man roster is at 39.
