Phillies claim Casper Wells off waivers

The Phillies claimed outfielder Casper Wells off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today.

Wells has appeared in 41 games this season between the Oakland Athletics and White Sox, batting .155 in 71 at-bats. The 28-year-old spent spring training with the Seattle Mariners before being claimed by the Toronto Blue Jays off waivers on April 10. He did not appear in a game for the Blue Jays before being designated for assignment and acquired by Oakland on April 22. The well-traveled outfielder played in three games with the A's before he was acquired by the White Sox on April 29.

"Casper is someone that we've had our eye on since spring training," Amaro said. "He's a versatile outfielder who adds depth to our club and can be a power threat off the bench."

In 2012, Wells led the Mariners with eight outfield assists, despite appearing in only 93 games.

Over the last four seasons, Wells has batted .236 with 30 doubles, four triples, 25 home runs and 81 RBI in 664 at-bats between the Detroit Tigers (2010-11), Mariners (2011-12), Athletics (2013) and White Sox (2013). In 35 career games against National League opponents, he is batting .316 with a .386 on-base percentage, three doubles, three home runs and 12 RBI. The Schenectady, NY, native has appeared in 121 games in right field, 97 games in left field, 26 games in center field and one game at pitcher.

Wells is scheduled to join the Phillies this weekend in Washington, D.C. A corresponding roster move will be made when he reports to the team.
