Marlins announce Minor League award winners
Brent Keys named Minor League Player of the Year; Anthony DeSclafani named Minor League Pitcher of the Year
MIAMI - The Miami Marlins today named OF Brent Keys and RHP Anthony DeSclafani as its Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Year. The announcement was made by Marlins' Vice President of Player Development Marty Scott. The players will be recognized with an on-field award ceremony prior to tonight's game.
Keys, 23, won the Florida State League batting title with a .346 average (132x381) in 95 games with Single-A Jupiter, just a year after winning the South Atlantic League batting crown (.335) with Single-A Greensboro. His .346 mark was the highest in Jupiter team history, besting Logan Morrison's .332 average in 2008. He also led the FSL with a .418 on-base percentage and ranked second in hits. He was the recipient of the Miami Marlins' Minor League Player of the Month award in May, batting .356 (36x101) with 12 runs scored, a home run, seven RBI and a .440 on-base percentage. Keys, a Florida State League Post-Season All-Star, led Marlins' minor leaguers in batting average, hits and on-base percentage. The Marlins' 17th round pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft owns a .315 career average, with 50 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 145 RBI in 356 games.
DeSclafani, 23, posted a 9-6 record with a 2.65 ERA (129.0 IP/38 ER) between Single-A Jupiter and Double-A Jacksonville. He began his season by going 4-2, 1.67 (54.0/10) in 12 starts for Jupiter, earning Marlins' Pitcher of the Month honors in April, Florida State League Pitcher of the Week honors for June 3-9, and FSL Mid-Season All-Star honors. He was promoted to Jacksonville on June 19, where he went 5-4 with a 3.36 ERA (75.0/28) in 13 starts. DeSclafani was acquired by the Marlins from Toronto on November 19, 2012.
