White Sox agree to terms with right-hander Ronald Belisario

The Chicago White Sox and free-agent right-handed pitcher Ronald Belisario have agreed to terms on a one-year, $3-million contract.

Belisario, 30, went 5-7 with a 3.97 ERA (30 ER/68.0 IP), one save, 49 strikeouts and 21 holds in 77 games with the Dodgers last season. He ranked second in the National League in appearances, fourth in ground ball percentage (77.9) among relievers and 11th in holds.

"Belisario provides us with a veteran reliever who owns a proven record of recording key outs at big moments of games," said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager. "He is a power arm with plus stuff who profiles well for our ballpark. He has experience pitching in hold and save situations, and we see him as yet another very strong option for Robin Ventura in the back end of our bullpen."

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Belisario has gone 20-12 with a 3.29 ERA (97 ER/265.0 IP), four saves, 220 strikeouts, 73 holds and a .227 (223-982) opponents average in 273 games (all in relief) over four major-league seasons with the Dodgers (2009-10, 2012-13).

Belisario, a native of Maracay, Venezuela, finished third in The Sporting News Comeback Player of the Year voting in 2012 after going 8-1 with a 2.54 ERA (20 ER/71.0 IP), 69 strikeouts, 23 holds and a .187 (47-252) opponents average in 68 games with Los Angeles-NL.

Belisario has pitched in 13 postseason games, including seven last season as the Dodgers advanced to the National League Championship Series. He also appeared in two games for Venezuela in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

Belisario is scheduled to be arbitration eligible after the 2014 and 2015 seasons and will not be eligible for free agency until after the 2016 season.

He originally was signed by Florida as a free agent on August 2, 1999.

With the move, the White Sox 40-man roster is at 40.
