Mariners announce short-season Minor League coaching staffs for 2014

PEORIA, AZ -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik and Director of Player Development Chris Gwynn announced today the Mariners Minor League Coaching Staffs for the organization's four short-season affiliates for the 2014 season.

Dave Valle enters his first season in the Mariners Minor League organization at the helm of the Seattle's affiliate in the Northwest League, the Everett AquaSox. Prior to joining the AquaSox, he spent the last 16 seasons as part of the Mariners broadcast team, including also spending the last five seasons as an analyst on the MLB Network's MLB Tonight show. The former catcher spent nine seasons behind the plate for the Mariners and 21 seasons in professional baseball after originally selected by the Mariners in the second round of the 1978 MLB Draft. Valle played for four teams in his 13-year Major League career, including the Mariners (1984-93), Boston (1994), Milwaukee (1994) and Texas (1995-96). He finished with a .237 lifetime batting average, 77 home runs and 350 RBI. Nasusel Cabrera, who also serves as the Latin American Pitching Coordinator, enters his first season with Everett after spending the last four seasons as pitching coach with Pulaski. Scott Steinmann is entering his 19th season in the Mariners organization as the hitting coach for Everett. Trainer Shane Zdebiak enters for his first season in the Mariners organization as AquaSox team trainer.

After managing Everett in 2012 and 2013, Rob Mummau will take over as manager of the Mariners affiliate in the Appalachian League, the Pulaski Mariners. Mummau enters his 13th season with the Mariners, including fourth as manager. He has led his squad to the postseason three times, accumulating a 162-125 (.564) record. Pitching coach Jason Blanton enters his first season with the Mariners after previously working as a pitching coach for USA Baseball on various events. Hitting coach Brent Johnson and trainer Matt Corvo will round out the staff in Pulaski.

Darrin Garner, who enters his 18th season in the Mariners organization, returns for the second season as manager of the Peoria Mariners in the Arizona League. Andy Bottin and Jose Umbria will serve as coaches for the Mariners and Rich Dorman will be the team's pitching coach. Randy Roetter returns for his 13th season with the team as trainer and Will Lindholm will be the Mariners performance coach.

Manager Claudio Almonte, pitching coach Danielin Acevedo, coaches Francisco Gerez and Manelik Pimentel and trainer Leonardo Jimenez will comprise the Mariners Dominican Summer League staff. Freddy Tiburcio will serve as the Field Coordinator for the Mariners in the Dominican Summer League. While manager Russell Vasquez, pitching coach Carlos Hernandez, coaches Alex Delgado and Richard Paz and trainers Johnny Molina and Luis Fermin will comprise the staff of the Mariners Venezuela Summer League team.
