Kris Medlen undergoes elbow surgery

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Atlanta Braves right-handed pitcher Kris Medlen underwent surgery yesterday to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The operation was performed in Gulf Breeze, Fla., by Dr. James Andrews.

The "Tommy John" surgical procedure was the second for Medlen, who underwent the same procedure in August 2010, also performed by Dr. Andrews.

Medlen last pitched on March 9, when he left his start against the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie in the fourth inning after experiencing pain in the forearm.

Medlen, 28, went 15-12 with a 3.11 ERA for the Braves in 2013 and was 10-1 with a 1.57 ERA in 2012. He owns a career record of 34-20 with a 2.95 ERA in 152 games. In his 61 career starts, he has gone 30-13 with a 2.96 ERA and a .246 opponents' batting average.
