Red Sox recall right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket

First Baseman Mike Napoli Placed On Disabled List

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, first baseman Mike Napoli was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left fourth finger sprain, retroactive to yesterday. Workman will start today's series finale against the Rays at 1:40 p.m. at Tropicana Field.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Workman, 25, rejoins the Red Sox for his second major league stint of the season after making his first career Opening Day roster in 2014. With Boston this year, he has no record with a 1.42 ERA (1 ER/6.1 IP), one walk, and seven strikeouts in three relief appearances. He was optioned to Pawtucket on April 8. With the PawSox, Workman pitched out of the starting rotation where he went 3-1 with a 5.12 ERA (22 ER/38.2 IP), 10 walks, and 34 strikeouts in seven starts.

Napoli, 32, originally dislocated the finger during a headfirst slide on April 15 at the Chicago White Sox. In 43 games for the Red Sox this season, he has hit .260 (40-for-154) with nine doubles, five home runs, and 22 RBI. Napoli leads the team in both on-base percentage (.390), and walks (31), and ranks second in home runs, and third in RBI. Among all major league players this season, his rate of 4.60 pitches per plate appearances ranks second. Defensively, he has committed just two errors in 347 total chances at first base for a .994 fielding percentage, which is fourth-best among all AL players at that position.
