Marlins acquire reliever Bryan Morris from Pittsburgh
MIAMI - The Marlins today acquired RHP Bryan Morris from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for their third pick in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft (39th overall, Competitive Balance Round A). The announcement was made by Marlins President of Baseball Operations Michael Hill.
Morris, 27, has appeared in 21 games with the Pirates this season, going 4-0 with a 3.80 ERA (23.2 IP/10 ER); he is tied for third in the Majors in wins by a reliever. Overall, he is 9-7 with a 3.46 ERA (93.2/36) in 81 career games, with 57 strikeouts to 42 walks (eight intentional) and a .250 average against.
The right-hander began last season with Triple-A Indianapolis before being promoted to Pittsburgh on April 12, posting a 5-7 record and 3.46 ERA (65.0/25) in 55 appearances over his rookie campaign. He made five appearances with the Pirates in 2012; his MLB debut came on September 14, 2012 at Chicago-NL.
He was drafted by Tampa Bay in the third round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, but did not sign. He was then selected by Los Angeles-NL in the first round (26th overall) of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. On July 31, 2008, he was traded to Pittsburgh as part of a three-team trade in which Boston acquired outfielder Jason Bay from Pittsburgh and Los Angeles-NL acquired outfielder Manny Ramirez from Boston.
