A's Select Two Players on Day 1 of First-Year Player Draft
OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's selected third baseman Matt Chapman from Cal State-Fullerton (first round, 25th overall) and right-handed pitcher Daniel Gossett from Clemson University (second round, 65th overall) on the first day of the 2014 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.
Chapman, a 6-2, 215-pound junior, batted .312 with six home runs and a team-leading 48 RBI this season for the Titans. He walked 27 times against just 26 strikeouts and finished the season with a .412 on-base percentage. The right-handed hitter also hit 16 doubles and stole six bases in eight attempts. The Trabuco Canyon, Calif., native was named to the First Team All-Big West Conference team following the 2014 season.
Gossett went 7-2 with a 1.93 ERA in 15 games (all starts) for Clemson this season. He struck out 107 while walking 30 in 107.1 innings, and led the Tigers in ERA, innings pitched and strikeouts. A 6-1, 195-pound right-hander, Gossett was named a First Team All-ACC performer in 2014. Originally from Lyman, S.C., Gossett posted a 23-9 record in three seasons at Clemson.
The draft resumes Friday at 10:05 a.m. PDT with rounds three through 10 and concludes Saturday at 10:05 a.m. PDT with rounds 11 through 40.
