Rockies select eight players on day two of MLB First-Year Player Draft

The Rockies have concluded the draft's second day by selecting eight more players during rounds 3-10. The Rockies have selected a total 11 players during the draft's first two days, including Denver-native and University of Evansville left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland with the 8^th overall selection in the draft.

Third Round Selection (82^nd overall): Sam Howard, LHP, Georgia Southern University

Howard, 21, is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound left-hander who started 15 games and appeared in a total of 16 games for Georgia Southern in his Junior season of 2014. Overall, Howard went 7-6 with a 2.35 ERA (95.2 ip, 22 er), 22 walks and 94 strikeouts for the Eagles in 2014. Opponents hit just .230 against him and he allowed just 5 home runs in his 95.2 innings. Howard was ranked by MLB.com as the 153^rd prospect in the draft and Baseball America named him the 122^nd-best prospect in the draft. Baseball America also named Howard the 7^th-best prospect in the draft from the state of Georgia. Howard finished the season strong, going 3-0 with a 1.08 ERA in the month of May and was named the Southern Conference's Pitcher of the Month for May.

Fourth Round Selection (113^th overall): Wesley Rodgers, OF, Spartanburg Methodist Junior College (SC)

Rodgers, 20, is a right-handed hitting and throwing outfielder who was the leadoff hitter for the Spartanburg Methodist College Pioneers, who finished third in the Junior College World Series in 2014. For the Pioneers, Rodgers hit .351 (73-for-208) with 18 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 35 RBI, 62 runs, 26 steals, 47 walks, 14 strikeouts, a .479 on-base percentage and a .476 slugging percentage in 60 games. The 6-foot-4, 175-pound Rodgers was ranked byBaseball America as the 243^rd-best player in the draft by Baseball America, as well as the state of South Carolina's 11 ^th-best prospect. Rodgers is committed to play next season at UNC Wilmington.

Fifth Round Selection (143^rd overall): Kevin Padlo, 3B, Murrieta Valley High School (CA)

Padlo, 17, was rated as the 129^th-best player in the draft by MLB.com and the 153^rd-best player by Baseball America. Baseball America also rated the 6-foot-1, 195-pound third baseman as the 28^th-best player in the state of California. In his Senior season at Murrieta Valley, Padlo hit .329 (23-for-70) with 4 doubles, 4 triples, 2 home runs, 15 RBI, 24 runs and a .515 on-base percentage. Padlo drew 26 walks in his 26 games played his senior season. Padlo was a named a 2014 Third-Team Perfect Game All-American and California All-Region First-Team member by Perfect Game.

Sixth Round Selection (173^rd overall): Max George, INF, Regis Jesuit High School (CO)

George, 18, was named the Gatorade Colorado Baseball Player of the Year in 2014 after leading Regis Jesuit High School to the Class 5A Championship Series. George hit .458 with 3 home runs, 14 extra-base hits, 24 RBI, 31 runs, 20 walks and 1.356 OPS. George, who has committed to Oregon State University, was a Perfect Game third team All-American and West Region First Team member. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound George was an All-State selection in both his Junior and Senior seasons at Regis.

Seventh Round Selection (203^rd overall): Drew Weeks, OF, North Florida University

Weeks, 20, was rated as the 285^th-best player in the draft by Baseball America prior to the draft. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Weeks leads Division I baseball with a .430 batting average in 2014. Overall this season, Weeks hit .430 (95-for-221) with 13 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home runs, 38 RBI, 52 runs, 10 steals, 18 walks, a .478 on-base percentage and a .606 slugging percentage. Weeks is a semifinalist for both the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award and the Gregg Olson Award. The Golden Spikes Award is annually awarded to college baseball's top player, while the Gregg Olson award is given to college baseball's breakout player of the year. Weeks was a member of the Atlantic Sun First-Team All-Conference team.

Eighth Round Selection (233^rd overall): Harrison Musgrave, LHP, West Virginia University

Musgrave, 22, was ranked as the 218^th-best player in the draft by Baseball America, as well as the top player in the draft from the state of West Virginia. In what was his Redshirt-Junior season of 2014, Musgrave went 5-3 with a 2.62 ERA (106.1 ip, 31 er), 22 walks and 87 strikeouts in 15 starts. He held opponents to a .227 average against and allowed just 5 home runs all season. In 2013, Musgrave was the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 33^rd round, but he chose to return to school for another season.

Ninth Round Selection (263^rd overall): Andrew Rohrbach, RHP, Long Beach St. University (CA)

Rohrbach, 22, was ranked the 266^th-best player in the draft by Baseball America. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound right-hander went 7-2 with a 2.05 ERA (109.2 ip, 25 er), 20 walks and 69 strikeouts in 16 starts for the Dirtbags in 2014. He led the team in starts, innings pitched and strikeouts. Opponents hit just .228 against him and he did not allow a home run all season. Rohrbach pitched just 4.0 innings in 2013 before becoming the Friday starter for Long Beach St. in 2014. He was an All-Big West Conference Honorable Mention this season.

10th Round Selection (293^rd overall): Troy Stein, C, Texas A&M University

Stein, 22, was the regular catcher for Texas A&M as a Senior in 2014, his third-straight season as the Aggie's regular catcher. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Stein hit .291 (57-for-196) with 12 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 24 RBI and 29 runs in 57 games. Stein had a .372 on-base percentage and a .403 slugging percentage. Stein posted a .993 fielding percentage and caught 25-percent of attempted base stealers (14-of-42).

First Day Recap

In last night's opening of the draft, the Rockies had three total selections. With the 8^th overall pick in the first round, the Rockies selected left-handed pitcher Kyle Freeland from the University of Evansville. Freeland, a Denver native and Thomas Jefferson High School graduate, was rated the 7th overall player in the draft by MLB.com and the 5th overall player in the draft by Baseball America.

With the club's compensatory pick in the first round (35th overall) in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, the Colorado Rockies selected infielder Forrest Wall from Orangewood Christian High School in Maitland, Florida. In the second round (#48th overall) the Rockies selected right-handed pitcher Ryan Castellani from Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, Arizona.

Freeland, 21, was selected to the Louisville Slugger All-America Third Team, the ninth player in Evansville's history to be selected for an All-America team. He was one of 21 players to be named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award, presented to the top amateur baseball player in the U.S, but was not named a finalist. Freeland finished the 2014 season with a 10-2 record, 1.90 ERA and 128 strikeouts to just 13 walks. Those strikeouts rank tied for fourth among all Division I pitchers. He went 6-0 in conference play with a .211 batting average against. Evansville won the Missouri Valley Conference Regular Season Title with a 15-6 record. The Purple Aces went 34-21 overall on the season.

Baseball America dubbed Freeland with the best command by a college pitcher entering the 2014 draft. They list him at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, up from his 170 pound listing when he was drafted in 2011 out of high school in the 35^th round by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Kyle was born in Denver and attended Thomas Jefferson High School in southeast Denver. As a senior, he posted an 8-2 record with a 1.39 ERA in 65.0 innings. In his four years, he held a 1.96 ERA and 208 strikeouts. Freeland was named an All-State player in 2011 while also earning All-District honors his junior and senior seasons.

He was named to Baseball America's Preseason All-America Second Team and entered the season ranked 9^th on the College Top 100 Draft Prospects. Much of his preseason acclaim stemmed from his performance in the Cape Cod Summer League where he was named an All-Star as a member of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. He led the league with 48 strikeouts and owned a 2.25 ERA through 9 games (6 starts).

Wall (6-foot-1, 180 pounds), 18, played in 21 games during his senior year at Orangewood Christian High School batting .500 (28-for-56) with 16 RBI, 31 runs and an on-base percentage of .610. In his four-year high school career, the left-handed hitting infielder hit .461 (106-for-230) with 25 doubles, 8 triples, 9 home runs, 70 RBI and 98 runs in 79 games. He also went 70-for-71 in stolen base attempts over his high school career.

He was rated as the #34 prospect in the draft and the #1 second baseman by Baseball America and the #42 prospect by MLB.com. Wall signed a letter-of-intent to play baseball at North Carolina.

Castellani (6-foot-4, 190 pounds), 17, went 1-0 with a save and a 1.59 ERA (22.0 ip, 5 er) in five games during his senior season for the Broncos. He led all Brophy Prep pitchers with 23 strikeouts and in innings pitched. The right-handed hurler was a 2014 Perfect Game 3rd Team All-American and West Region 1st Team. He was rated as the #98 prospect and #3 player in the state of Arizona by Baseball America. He is committed to play baseball at Arizona State University.
