2014 Houston Astros First-Year Player Draft Information

HOUSTON SELECTIONS (DAY 1-3): The Houston Astros have selected 41 players in the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, which ended earlier tonight. The Astros selected 15 right-handed pitchers, five left-handed pitchers, 11 infielders, six outfielders and four catchers. In total, Houston selected 20 pitchers and 21 position players

The Astros selected 37 of their 41 draft picks out of the collegiate ranks.

Today's portion of the draft included rounds 11-40.

COLLEGIATE RANKS: The 37 college players selected mark the most by the Astros since Houston also took 37 collegiate players in 2011, when the draft was still 50 rounds long. The four high school players are the fewest taken by Houston in franchise history. For comparison, in the last two drafts the Astros went with 31 college players and nine high school players in 2013 and 30 college players and 11 high school players in 2012.

INFUSE TALENT: According to ESPN.com, the Astros entered this season with the best minor league system in baseball. That system has produced two Major Leaguers thus far in 2014 in OF George Springer and 1B Jon Singleton, ranked by Baseball America as the Astros No. 2 and No. 7 prospects. Other drafted players in the club's top 10 prospects include SS Carlos Correa (1st round, 2012), RHP Mark Appel (1st round, 2013), RHP Mike Foltynewicz (1st round, 2010), RHP Lance McCullers (1st round, 2012) and RHP Vince Velasquez (2nd round, 2010).
