Padres sign a number of selections from the 2014 Draft

Club signs each of its top three selections, including INF Trea Turner, OF Michael Gettys and RHP Zech Lemond

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced they have signed 22 of the club's 40 draft selections including the club's first three selections in infielder Trea Turner (13th overall selection), outfielder Michael Gettys (second round) and right-handed pitcher Zech Lemond (third round). Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcements.

Turner was selected with the 13th overall pick out of North Carolina State University by the Padres. Recommended by Padres Area Scout Tyler Stubblefield, Turner hit .321 (69-for-215) this past season for the Wolfpack, collecting 12 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 65 runs scored, 26 stolen bases along with a .418 on-base percentage as well as a .516 slugging percentage in 54 games as a junior in 2014. The right-handed hitting infielder ranked among the Atlantic Coast Conference leaders in several offensive categories during the 2014 season, including: runs (1st), stolen bases (1st), home runs (T-4th), slugging percentage (T-4th) and total bases (54, T-5th). 

Gettys was selected in the second round by the padres with the 51st overall pick out of Gainesville High School in Gainesville, GA. Recommended by Padres Area Scout Andrew Salvo, the 18-year-old outfielder hit for a .372 batting average (32-for-86) with seven doubles, nine home runs, 33 runs scored, 14 stolen bases and 40 RBI with a .452 on-base percentage and .767 slugging percentage in 28 games during his senior season for the Red Elephants in 2014. In addition to his work at the plate, the 6-1, 210 pound outfielder pitched to a 5-3 record with a 1.25 ERA (8 ER, 44.2 IP) with 71 strikeouts against 14 walks while limiting the opposition to a .220 average in eight appearances on the mound.

Lemond was selected by the Padres in the third round (86th overall). He is a 6-1, 170 pound right-handed pitcher out of Rice University who posted a 4-1 record with a 1.34 ERA (8 ER, 53.2 IP) with three saves over 15 appearances, five starts, during his junior season for the Owls in 2014. He also went 2-0 with 1.25 ERA (5 ER, 36.0 IP) in his five starts and averaged 7.1 innings as the team's Friday night starter, including 36 strikeouts in 36.0 innings pitched. The Houston, TX, native set the school record for saves during the 2013 season after he closed the door on 14 games for the Owls, surpassing the previous mark of 13 set by Major League pitchers David Aardsma and Tony Cingrani.
