Phillies place Gwynn Jr. on bereavement list, recall Altherr

Phillies outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. has been placed on the bereavement list, Senior Vice President and General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. To fill his spot on the Phillies 25-man roster, outfielder Aaron Altherr has been recalled from double-A Reading.

Gwynn Jr., 31, is batting .155 with a .268 on-base percentage (13 walks) in 52 games for Philadelphia this season. He has appeared at all three outfield positions for the Phillies in 2014, including 13 starts (12 in CF, 1 in LF), without committing an error (39 TC). An eight-year major league veteran, Gwynn has a .239 career average and .310 on-base percentage in 657 games between the Brewers (2006-08), Padres (2009-10), Dodgers (2011-12) and Phillies.

The 23-year-old Altherr has hit .245 with 11 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 23 RBI in 52 games with Reading this season. He had a 12-game hitting streak at the time of his recall, over which he was batting .417 (20-48) with six extra-base hits (4 2B, 3B, HR) and nine RBI. Altherr began the season on the disabled list with a right wrist injury.   He will wear #40 in his first-ever stint in the major leagues.
