INF Darwin Barney Placed on Paternity Leave List, LHP Chris Rusin and LHP Tsuyoshi Wada Optioned to Iowa

CINCINNATI - The Chicago Cubs today recalled infielder/outfielder Arismendy Alcantara and right-handed pitcher Dallas Beeler from Triple-A Iowa. In corresponding moves, infielder Darwin Barney has been placed on the paternity leave list and left-handed pitcher Chris Rusin has been optioned to Iowa. Additionally, left-handed pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada, Chicago's 26th player in yesterday's doubleheader, was optioned back to Iowa following last night's game.

Alcantara will wear uniform No. 7 and is available for tonight's 6:10 p.m. CT game in Cincinnati against the Reds. Beeler, who wears uniform No. 32, is scheduled to make tonight's start for Chicago.

Alcantara, 22, looks to make his major league debut after hitting .307 (103-for-335) with 25 doubles, 11 triples, 10 home runs, 41 RBI and 21 stolen bases in 89 games to begin the season with Iowa, his first at the Triple-A level. Named a Pacific Coast League All-Star, he is the only player in the minors to reach 25 doubles, 10 triples, 10 home runs and 20 stolen bases. His 46 extra-base hits rank tied for ninth in the minors.

A switch-hitter, Alcantara has a .374 average (37-for-99) against left-handed pitching and a .280 average (66-for-236) against righthanders. He batted .345 (39-for-113) in June and enjoyed a 13-game hitting streak from June 22-July 3, in which he hit .463 (25-for-54) with a 1.214 OPS. He has played 70 games at second base, 11 games in center field and six games at shortstop.

Signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in November of 2008, Alcantara owns a .284 batting average (570-for-2,006) with 104 doubles, 41 triples, 40 home runs, 254 RBI and 112 stolen bases in 530 career minor league games. He was a 2013 Southern League mid-season and post-season All-Star for Double-A Tennessee, and hit a home run in the 2013 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game, July 14, 2013, at Citi Field in New York as part of MLB's All-Star Weekend.

Beeler, 25, makes his second start for the Cubs after making his major league debut in the first game of the June 28 twinbill vs. the Nationals, an outing in which he allowed one unearned run in 6.0 innings pitched. He is 5-3 with a 3.93 ERA (29 ER/66.1 IP) in 11 starts with Iowa this season, his first-career stop at Triple-A. The 6-foot-5, 210-pounder has walked only 17 batters and allowed just five home runs in 66.1 innings pitched, an average 2.3 walks per nine innings and one home run allowed per 13.1 innings.

The righthander is in his fifth professional campaign since being selected by the Cubs in the 41st round of the 2010 Draft out of Oral Roberts University. Beeler reached Double-A Tennessee in his first full pro campaign in 2011 and made a career-high 27 starts for Tennessee in 2012 before being slowed by a sprained finger on his right hand last year, limiting him to only nine starts. Beeler is a career 17-21 with a 3.69 ERA (152 ER/370.1 IP) in 77 minor league outings (69 starts). He is a native of Tulsa, Okla., and a 2008 graduate of Jenks (Okla.) High School.

Barney, 28, is hitting .224 (44-for-196) with 10 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 16 RBI in 70 games for the Cubs this season, including a .387 average (12-for-31) in eight July games.

Rusin, 27, has made two relief appearances for the Cubs and spent most of the season with Iowa, where he is 6-10 with a 3.96 ERA (44 ER/100.0 IP) in 16 starts. He tossed a 9.0-inning no-hitter, May 7 at New Orleans.

Wada, 33, made his major league debut and allowed one unearned run in 5.0 innings in yesterday's nightcap in Cincinnati. He is 9-5 with a 2.66 ERA (30 ER/101.2 IP) in 17 games (16 starts) for Iowa this season.
