Red Sox recall right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket

Left-Handed Pitcher Felix Doubront Traded to the Chicago Cubs

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today recalled right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket and traded left-handed pitcher Felix Doubront to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for a player to be named later. Workman, who fills Doubront's spot on the 25-man roster, is scheduled to start tonight's series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park beginning at 7:10 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Workman, 25, is 1-3 with a 4.13 ERA (24 ER/52.1 IP), 41 strikeouts, and 19 walks allowed in 11 outings this season over two stints with the Red Sox, including eight starts. After making his first career Opening Day roster, he allowed one run over three relief appearances (6.1 IP) for a 1.42 ERA and was optioned to Pawtucket on April 9. Recalled on May 25, Workman made eight appearances, all as a starter, and went 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA (23 ER/46.0 IP) before returning to the PawSox. Over two stints with Pawtucket this season, the right-hander has a 6-1 record and a 4.45 ERA (27 ER/54.2 IP), including 3-0 with a 2.81 ERA (5 ER/16.0 IP) in three starts since being optioned on July 8. The native of Arlington, TX was signed by the Red Sox as a second-round selection in the 2010 June Draft.  

Doubront, 26, went 2-4 with a 6.07 ERA (40 ER/59.1 IP), 43 strikeouts, and 20 walks allowed in 17 outings this season. A member of the rotation to begin the year, he posted a 2-4 record with a 5.19 ERA (29 ER/50.1 IP) in 10 starts before shifting to the bullpen in late June. As a reliever, he has allowed 11 runs in 9.0 innings (11.00 ERA). Signed by Boston as an international free agent in 2004, Doubront went 26-22 with three saves, a 4.82 ERA (224 ER/418.0 IP), 378 strikeouts, and 186 walks in parts of five seasons as a member of the Red Sox from 2010-14.
