Detroit Tigers acquire David Price from Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Drew Smyly, Austin Jackson and Willy Adames

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers announced today that the club has acquired lefthanded pitcher David Price from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for lefthanded pitcher Drew Smyly, outfielder Austin Jackson and infielder Willy Adames.  

Price, 28, has compiled a 11-8 record, 3.11 ERA (170.2IP/59ER) and 189 strikeouts in 23 starts with the Rays this season. Opponents are hitting .238 (156x655) against him this season, while he has issued 23 walks. The 6-6, 210 lbs. lefthander has posted a 7-2 record, 1.90 ERA (71.0IP/15ER) and 78 strikeouts over his last nine starts. He has pitched seven innings-or-more in each of his last nine starts, while holding opponents to a .197 (51x259) batting average. Additionally, he has allowed three earned runs-or-less each of his last nine starts.

Price currently leads the American League this season with 189 strikeouts and 170.2 innings pitched, while he is third with an 8.22 SO/BB ratio, fifth with 9.97 strikeouts per nine innings pitched and tied for sixth with 11 wins. Price was selected to the 2014 American League All Star team by AL manager John Farrell, marking his fourth career selection.

The 2012 American League Cy Young Award winner has compiled a 82-47 record, 3.18 ERA (1143.2IP/404ER) and 1065 strikeouts in parts of seven seasons with the Rays. For each of the past two seasons, David has been the Rays nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award. The Vanderbilt alum was originally selected in the first round (first overall) of the 2007 first year player draft. He was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and currently makes his residence in Nashville.

Prior to today's game, Jackson hit .270 (100x370) with 52 runs scored, 25 doubles, five triples, four home runs and 32 RBI in 99 games played with the Tigers in 2014. In five seasons with Detroit, he batted .277 (741x2674) with 447 runs scored, 140 doubles, 43 triples and 233 RBI over 669 games.

Before today's start, Smyly compiled a 6-9 record, 3.77 ERA (100.1IP/42ER) and 87 strikeouts in 20 games (17 starts) with the Tigers this season. In three seasons with Detroit, the lefthander compiled a 16-12 record, 3.46 ERA (275.2IP/106ER) and 262 strikeouts in 106 games (35 starts) with the Tigers.

Willy Adames has spent the entire 2014 season at Single A West Michigan, batting .269 (95x353) with 40 runs scored, 14 doubles, 12 triples, six home runs and 50 RBI in 98 games with the Whitecaps.
