Marlins sign catcher Nieto to Minors deal
MIAMI -- The Marlins added some catching depth by signing Adrian Nieto to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training. A switch-hitter, Nieto appeared in 48 games for the White Sox in 2014.
Nieto, 26, was born in Cuba and has South Florida ties, attending American Heritage High School in Plantation. This season he played for Double-A Birmingham in the Southern League.
In 2014, Nieto batted .236 with two home runs and seven RBIs. In parts of six Minor League seasons, he's a career .246 hitter with 32 home runs and 190 RBIs in 438 career games.
The Marlins have two catchers on their 40-man roster, J.T. Realmuto and Tomas Telis. The club also has expressed interest in bringing back Jeff Mathis, who is now a free agent.
Nieto was a fifth-round pick of the Nationals in 2008.
