Ailing right calf keeps Maybin sidelined for finale

CHICAGO -- Outfielder Cameron Maybin wasn't in Sunday's starting lineup and was likely unavailable to hit in the final game of the Padres' three-game series against the White Sox.

Maybin left Saturday's 4-2 victory with tightness in his right calf. According to manager Bud Black, it has been bothering him in recent days.

"Cam is doing a little better, but he's still a little sore," Black said. "So we're going to try and be cautious with this."

Maybin -- who was replaced Saturday by Chris Denorfia -- would have certainly been in Sunday's lineup against White Sox left-handed pitcher Chris Sale.

Maybin missed the first 25 games of the season while recovering from a ruptured left biceps tendon he injured making a diving catch in a Spring Training game in March.

Since returning from the disabled list on April 27, Maybin is hitting .303 with one home run. He hit that homer in a victory over the White Sox on Friday.

Will Venable got the start in center field on Sunday, a day after he tied his career high with four hits.
