Pollock emerging as D-backs' secret weapon

PHOENIX -- Paul Goldschmidt has gotten plenty of well-deserved attention of late for the way he's swinging the bat, but as opponent's advance scouts will likely tell you, D-backs outfielder A.J. Pollock is also on quite an impressive run.

Pollock was once again in the middle of the action Friday night as he went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a stolen base as the D-backs beat the Mets, 7-2, at Chase Field.

Pollock, who was not even listed in the top 15 of National League outfielders in this past week's All-Star Game fan vote totals, is riding a six-game hitting streak. Over his last 17 games, he's hitting .429 with four homers, 12 RBIs and 17 runs scored.

"He's doing everything," D-backs outfielder Ender Inciarte said of Pollock. "He's stealing bases, he's taking the extra base, he's hitting home runs and right now him and Goldy are amazing. They are doing unbelievable things."

In just about every one of manager Chip Hale's recent postgame press conferences he's been asked about Pollock. Not that he minds.

"When guys play well, they should be talked about," Hale said. "He's having a good season, he's having a good run right now. He's showing what we all thought he could do. Like I said before, he's such an athlete sometimes he could look ugly at the plate and he makes adjustments and good athletes can do that."

Pollock was not the only key contributor Friday.

Yasmany Tomas, signed to a $68.5 million deal this past winter, made his first start of the year in right field and not only contributed at the plate, but also in the field.

Tomas was 2-for-3 with a walk and it was his double in the sixth that gave D-backs the lead for good.

After Goldschmidt singled home Pollock to tie the game at 2, Tomas ripped a double to the left-field corner, scoring Goldschmidt from first. Arizona would later tack on four runs in the eighth.

"He swung the bat well," Hale said. "He had the hard ball up the middle and hit the ball down the left-field line. He just keeps proving to us that he can hit in pressure situations and hitting behind Goldy has not bothered him."

Tomas also came up big on defense when he made a running catch on Anthony Recker's line drive in the fourth inning. The catch came with runners on first and second and had the ball gotten past Tomas both runners would have easily scored.

"He's way more athletic than anyone wants to give him credit for and once he gets underway, he can run a little bit," Hale said. "He's shown that on the bases and he ran well, got a good angle on the ball."
