CF Alberth Martinez has 2 HRs, 4 RBIs for Double-A San Antonio

Wieck, 3 relievers share shutout for Single-A Lake Elsinore

Bill Center, longtime sportswriter for U-T San Diego, is an employee of the Padres.

Center fielder Alberth Martinez hit two home runs and drove in four runs for Double-A San Antonio Sunday while left-handed starter Brad Wieck and three relievers combined for a two-hit shutout for high Single-A Lake Elsinore.

Martinez, 24, was 3-for-5 with two runs scored Sunday and is hitting .390 (16-for-41) with four homers and nine RBIs in his past 10 games. The Venezuelan is hitting .294 on the season.

Left fielder Luis Domoromo (.264) was 3-for-4 with an RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored in the 49-65 Missions 8-6 win at Frisco.

Designated hitter Yeison Asencio (.299) was another of the four Missions hitters with three hits, going 3-for-5 with a steal and an RBI. Shortstop Benji Gonzalez (.225) was 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

Rehabbing Padre Cory Spangenberg was 2-for-6 with a steal and two runs scored. He started at third base and is hitting .199 on the assignment.

Starting right-handed pitcher James Needy allowed five runs on six hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. The Santana High grad is 5-1 with a 3.18 ERA with the Missions. Left-handed reliever Eury De La Rosa (2.25 ERA) allowed a run on a hit and two walks with five strikeouts in two innings to get his first save.

At Lake Elsinore, Wieck (1-4, 4.85 ERA) allowed two hits and three walks with six strikeouts over the first six innings of the shutout. Left-hander Griffin Russell (4.91, one walk) and right-handers Eric Yardley (3.10) and Jason Jester (3.31, fourth save, one strikeout) each pitched a hitless inning to complete the shutout.

Center fielder Auston Bousfield (.278) was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Right fielder Donavan Tate (.217) hit his sixth homer in three at-bats. 

Second baseman Fernando Perez (.237) and DH Ryan Miller (.281) were each 2-for-4.

AROUND THE FARM:

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (59-56): ALBUQUERQUE 5, Chihuahuas 4 - Starting RHP Daniel McCutchen (4.19 ERA) allowed one run on seven hits and a walk with six strikeouts in six innings and was 1-for-3 as a hitter with an RBI and a run scored. LHP Caleb Thielbar, who was claimed on waivers by the Padres from the Twins on Saturday, allowed a hit with a strikeout in a scoreless inning in his first outing with the Chihuahuas. RHP Tayron Guerrero followed with two strikeouts in a perfect inning. But RHP Jay Jackson (1-3, 2.06 ERA) allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk with a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning to suffer the loss. Shortstop Diego Goris (.350) was 2-for-4. Second baseman Ramiro Pena (.311) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Center fielder Travis Jankowski (.418) was 1-for-1 with a RBI. Right fielder Rymer Liriano (.274) was 0-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.

LOW SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (58-53): TIN CAPS 4, Peoria 2 - Starting RHP Chris Huffman (3.30 ERA) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with a strikeout in five innings. LHP Kyle McGrath (2.11 ERA) allowed two hits and a walk with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings. RHPs T.J. Weir (5-3, 3.62 ERA) and Yimmi Brasoban (seventh save, 2.48 ERA) each had a strikeout in a perfect inning. Center fielder Michael Gettys (.227) had a double in four at-bats with two RBIs. First baseman Trae Santos (.254) was 1-for-3 with a sacrifice fly and a run scored. Right fielder Franmil Reyes (.249) was 1-for-1 with three walks and a run scored. Catcher Michael Miller (.167) was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

SHORT-SEASON SINGLE-A TRI-CITY (28-21): DUST DEVILS 7, Spokane 3 - Catcher Austin Allen (.208, two RBIs) first baseman Ty France (.315 with a walk and a run scored) and third baseman Carlos Belen (.219) all hit home runs for Tri-City. Left fielder Jose Carlos Urena (.287) was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Right fielder Justin Pacchioli (.246) was 2-for-4 with two steals and two runs scored. RHP Adrian De Horta (2.25 ERA) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts in five innings. RHP Wilson Santos (1-0, 3.31 ERA) allowed a hit with two walks and three strikeouts in two scoreless innings. RHP Samuel Holland (2.81 ERA) and Phil Maton (1.11 ERA) each struck out two in a perfect inning.

ARIZONA ROOKIE PADRES (16-23): Rangers 8, PADRES 3 - DH Jonas Lantigua (.247) had a double in four at-bats with three RBIs. Center fielder Josh Magee (.213) was 2-for-3 with a walk, his 12th steal and two runs scored. Catcher Kyle Overstreet (.207) was 2-for-4. Starting RHP Jacob Nix (0-2, 9.31 ERA) allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts in three innings. RHP Adonis Diaz (3.72 ERA) allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts in three innings. RHP Braxton Lorenzini (4.61 ERA) allowed a hit with two strikeouts in two scoreless innings.
