Padres break through late, top Giants in 11th
SAN FRANCISCO -- Alexi Amarista's single off the glove of Giants reliever Hunter Strickland gave the Padres a 3-2 victory over the Giants in 11 innings at AT&T Park on Tuesday.

Derek Norris doubled with one out off Strickland and Justin Upton followed with a single before Amarista gave the Padres (35-38) a lead in a game where they struck out 18 times.
"That was a great team win," said Padres interim manager Pat Murphy.
San Francisco starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner retired the first 14 batters he faced and had a career-high 14 strikeouts. But he allowed a two-run double to Will Venable in the eighth inning that tied the game.
"That's the way the game is," Bumgarner said. "It's funny sometimes. It's not ideal for us. Obviously we'd like to be winning games, but we've just got to keep going out there and grinding."

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
It just takes one: Bumgarner looked like he had no-hit stuff early on, retiring the first 14 hitters, 10 on strikeouts. But the Padres, who have been no-hit by the Giants three times since 2009, got Yonder Alonso's two-out, fifth-inning single into right field to avoid another no-no.
That rundown feeling: With runners on the corners and two outs in the fifth inning, the Padres tried to steal a run as Will Middlebrooks broke from first base. But with Alonso poised to dash to the plate from third base, Brandon Belt alertly threw home. That started a rundown that resulted in Brandon Crawford tagging out Alonso.

Big arm, big throw: San Diego right fielder Matt Kemp showed off his arm in the first inning Tuesday, as he threw out Angel Pagan trying to stretch a single into a double. The throw came from near the right-field corner with Kemp's momentum essentially carrying him in that direction. It was his seventh assist of the season, the most on the team.

Blanco brings home a run: With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Gregor Blanco, filling in for the injured Nori Aoki, hit a tapper in front of the mound that starter Odrisamer Despaigne couldn't quite handle. The pitcher bent down to pick up the slow roller, but the ball slid through his fingers and Blanco reached first without a throw. Matt Duffy, who doubled to lead off the inning, scored easily from third to give the Giants their first run.

"We got a break there with that little dribbler that the pitcher couldn't handle," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "We got two runs out of that, but we've got to find a way to get this offense clicking."

REPLAY REVIEW
The Padres used a manager's challenge to contest a call in the eighth inning on Giants reliever Javier Lopez's throw to second base on a comebacker. Venable was tagged out by Crawford on the play as he tried to get back to the bag. Venable was called out and a review determined the call stands.

SWING AND MISS
The Padres' 2-3-4 hitters -- Norris, Upton and Kemp -- finished a combined 2-for-13 with 11 strikeouts.
A FIRST FOR EVERYTHING
Murphy, on the job for a week, earned his first ejection during the eighth inning when he argued with home-plate umpire Fieldin Culbreth after Clint Barmes struck out. Kemp was also ejected.
"We had a nice conversation," Murphy said with a smile.

WHAT'S NEXT
Padres: Ian Kennedy (4-5, 5.43) gets the start Wednesday against the Giants. He beat them the last time he faced them, allowing one run over seven innings in a start at AT&T Park.
Giants: Ryan Vogelsong (5-5, 4.38) takes the mound Wednesday looking to replicate his previous performance against the Padres this season. The right-hander shut out San Diego over seven innings on May 5 at AT&T Park.
