Street likely to miss rest of regular season

Angels closer has Grade 1 left groin strain, MRI shows

ANAHEIM -- Angels closer Huston Street is likely out for the rest of the regular season after an MRI on Sunday indicated he has a Grade 1 left groin strain, but Street remained hopeful that he could return during the postseason if the Angels get there.

Even though the Angels were still fighting for a playoff spot -- they sat 1/2 game behind the Astros for a Wild Card spot after Sunday's 3-2 win over the Mariners -- there's at least a chance they get their most important bullpen arm back if they make the postseason.

"The MRI results, I think, were very positive," Street said. "Probably not gonna be before the end of the season -- that is unfortunate. If we get there, I'm gonna try to be back as soon as I possibly can."

He was on crutches in the Angels locker room, trying to keep weight off his groin for the first 72 hours after the injury -- after that, he thought he'd have a better idea where he stood.

Street sustained the injury on Saturday coming off the mound toward third base on a groundout. He doubled over, in significant pain, and had to be helped off the field.

The Angels were already missing setup man Joe Smith, who has a sprained left ankle. Smith tested the ankle throwing off a mound before Sunday's game, but manager Mike Scioscia said Smith was not yet day to day or on the verge of being available.

The Angels and interim GM Bill Stoneman will look both inside and outside the organization for relief help, Scioscia said. Anyone acquired in a trade would be ineligible for a postseason roster, but could help the Angels get to the playoffs in their final regular-season games.

In the meantime, the Angels are closing games by committee, with Trevor Gott, Fernando Salas, Mike Morin, Jose Alvarez and Cesar Ramos all in the mix, depending on matchups and usage.

"The better they pitch, the better chance I've got of coming back and helping this team down the stretch," Street said.

Morin got the save opportunity on Sunday, converting it with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

"It's gonna take every arm we have down there," Scioscia said.
