Mulder, top prospects invited to Spring Training

Veteran left-hander will get opportunity to compete for spot in starting rotation

The Angels invited 19 players to Spring Training on Tuesday, highlighted by veteran left-hander Mark Mulder and a handful of top prospects.

Mulder, 36, will compete for a rotation spot as he tries to return to the Majors five years after his last pitch.

Others to keep an eye on are the youngsters, including the club's top four prospects, per MLB.com.

Third baseman Kaleb Cowart, the club's No. 1 prospect, is looking to impress after a rough season at Double-A Arkansas, where he hit just .221.

No. 2 prospect C.J. Cron, a first baseman, looks to bring the hot bat he wielded in the Arizona Fall League to Spring Training after hitting .413 with five home runs and 20 RBIs for the Mesa Solar Sox.

Second baseman Taylor Lindsey, the club's No. 3 prospect, hit .274 for Arkansas last season, while No. 4 prospect, right-hander Mark Sappington, was 11-4 with a 3.37 ERA at Class A Advanced Inland Empire before a promotion to Double-A.

Other notable players include right-hander Mike Morin (No. 8 prospect), outfielder Zach Borenstein (2013 California League Most Valuable Player), left-hander Hunter Green (2013 second-round Draft pick) and veteran lefties Wade LeBlanc and Clay Rapada.

The rest of the invites were handed out to right-handers Yeiper Castillo and Jarret Grube, left-hander Justin Thomas, catchers Jeff Bandy and Luis Martinez, infielders Shawn O'Malley, Eric Stamets and Alex Yarbrough, and outfielder Matt Long.
