Scioscia successfully challenges call on Shuck

WASHINGTON -- Angels manager Mike Scioscia is now 2-for-4 in challenges this season, after getting umpires to overturn a third-inning call at first base to allow J.B. Shuck to reach safely with an infield single on Monday.

In a scoreless game at Nationals Park, Shuck led off the top of the third with a slow roller to first base, and slid headfirst into first, appearing to get his left hand on the bag before Nats starter Tanner Roark could touch it with his cleats.

First-base umpire Jerry Meals initially deemed Shuck out, but the call was overturned after Scioscia used his challenge. Because he was successful, Scioscia retained a second challenge for the rest of the game.

The Angels didn't score that inning, however. Mike Trout singled to right field, but Albert Pujols grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, and Ian Stewart flied out to center.
