Angels prospects make debut in All-Star Futures Game
Rondon goes hitless in two at-bats; Alcantara throws eight pitches, walks one
MINNEAPOLIS -- A pair of Angels prospects made their All-Star Futures Game debut on Sunday at Target Field.
Los Angeles' No. 5 prospect, Jose Rondon, a late add to the World Team in place of injured Astros prospect Carlos Correa, entered the game in the fifth inning and went hitless in two at-bats.
There's no denying his potential, though.
The 20-year-old shortstop is batting .333 with a .369 on-base percentage and 21 extra-base hits in 288 at-bats for Advanced Class A Inland Empire despite having never played above Rookie level before this season.
A native of Venezuela, Rondon has made consistent contact in his professional career, showcasing impressive strike-zone discipline with the potential to develop into a gap hitter.
Victor Alcantara, a $280,000 free-agent signing in 2012 and now ranked as the Angels' No. 16 prospect, threw eight pitches in Sunday's affair, walking one in 1/3 of an inning for the World Team.
The 21-year-old Dominican right-hander, equipped with a fastball in the upper-90s to go along with a slider and changeup, is currently pitching for Class A Advanced Burlington in the Midwest League. He's 5-4 with a 4.28 ERA in 18 games, including 12 starts, and has struck out 72 in 80 innings.
