Ankle feeling better, but Simmons sits

BOSTON -- Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons came into the visitors' clubhouse at Fenway Park on Wednesday "begging" manager Fredi Gonzalez to get him into the lineup, but Atlanta's skipper told the 24-year-old he'll have to wait one more day.

Simmons exited in the seventh inning of Tuesday night's loss to the Red Sox with right ankle inflammation, something he said had been bothering him on and off for a few weeks. After a day-off Wednesday at Fenway Park --- where the temperature is barely cracking 50 degrees and mist has been falling all day --- Gonzalez is opting to play it safe.

Ramiro Pena started at shortstop and batted ninth.

"We're going to give him another day, especially when it's misty and rainy," Gonzalez said. "We don't want another setback."

Simmons won't take any swings prior to the game, either.

"But there's no long-term thing there," Gonzalez said.
