April showers, bring May ... snowstorms?!

Rays-Royals game postponed by snow on Thursday

Mother Nature isn't quite done wreaking havoc on Major League Baseball this season, even though April showers have supposedly passed.

Thursday's Royals/Rays game at Kauffman Stadium was postponed because of snow. No makeup date has been announced, as the Rays are not scheduled to return to Kansas City this season.

The weather started out as rain before turning to sleet and, eventually, snow, forcing the umpires to call the game in the middle of the fourth inning.

During a third-inning delay the Royals also played video of a fireplace on the center-field video board to try to evoke warm thoughts for fans.

Some players, such as Kansas City's Alcides Escobar and Mike Moustakas, raced onto the tarp and did a slide into second base through the snow. Others, like Royals right-hander Luis Mendoza -- a native of Veracruz, Mexico -- snapped a picture of the surprising May weather.
