Goldschmidt ranks third in the voting at first base behind the Reds' Joey Votto and Brandon Belt of the Giants.
After a hot start in April, Goldschmidt kept it going in May as he hit .376 with seven homers while compiling a .699 slugging percentage and getting on base at a .434 clip during the month.
Goldschmidt, who is the only D-backs player to rank among the balloting leaders, does his best to deflect any personal attention, and that's a trait that has endeared him to Arizona manager Kirk Gibson.
"He's very humble, he stays humble," Gibson said. "I think he understands you've got to kind of keep a level head and not get too excited over things. He realizes the journey that he's on -- how long it is and that's kind of one of the ways he leads, people watch him. He just continues to impress with his demeanor, mentality, preparation and performance. He's just really good."
