Miley gives up one unearned run in five strong innings

Gregorius' error allows Oakland's first run in loss

PHOENIX -- Lefty Scott Kazmir tossed three scoreless innings in his Cactus League debut to help the A's to a 2-0 victory over the D-backs at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Kazmir, signed by the A's to a two-year, $22 million deal this winter, totaled 40 pitches and threw 31 of them for strikes, giving up two hits with no walks and two strikeouts along the way.

Five of the nine outs he compiled were groundouts, which made for a busy first day at first base for Alberto Callaspo, who handled the position without any issues.

Arizona southpaw Wade Miley had a nice outing of his own, giving up just one unearned run over five innings in his second spring start. Miley allowed three hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Oakland's first run came in the fifth, when Josh Reddick led off with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout, stole third and came home on shortstop Didi Gregorius' error on Stephen Vogt's ground ball.

"It felt good, located a little better today and got loose that last inning," Miley said. "That at-bat against Reddick kind of lost it for a second, but got through it. Threw all my pitches again. Threw some changeups, I wanted to throw more changeups today, and I did and it was a good pitch today, and just keep making progress."

A's righty Jesse Chavez pitched four shutout innings, giving up only one hit and striking out five. He's yet to give up a run in 8 2/3 innings this spring.
