D-backs near deal with free-agent lefty Perez

PHOENIX -- The D-backs are near an agreement on a two-year contract with free-agent left-hander Oliver Perez, a baseball source confirmed.

The deal is pending a physical and the finalizing of contract language.

The D-backs have not announced, nor confirmed the move.

Perez, 32, has become a left-handed specialist reliever the past two seasons with the Mariners after beginning his career as a starter.

In 94 games for the Mariners in 2012-13, Perez had a 3.16 ERA over 82 2/3 innings.

The D-backs had a need for left-handed help in the bullpen. They acquired Joe Thatcher from the Padres last year at the trade deadline, but Thatcher struggled to a 6.75 ERA.
