Pollock placed on DL, will undergo surgery on hand

PHOENIX -- D-backs center fielder A.J. Pollock will need surgery on his right hand after suffering a fractured fourth metacarpal bone when he was hit by a pitch against the Reds on Saturday.

Manager Kirk Gibson said the surgery would take place in the next few days. Pollock was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday.

"The bone is kind of upwards," Gibson said. "They're going to pull it, traction, straighten it out, probably put a plate on it. Ideally, they'd like to put a pin in it, I guess, but I don't know if they're going to be able to do that."

Gibson said the timetable for Pollock's return has not been set, but it could be anywhere from five weeks to two months.

"It's a guess," he said.

As for Pollock, the D-backs' leading hitter is taking the injury as well as anyone can. He has suffered a serious injury in the past. In 2010 -- his first year with the D-backs organization -- Pollock had surgery on his right elbow to repair a fractured growth plate.

"The elbow one was a freak kind of thing," Pollock said. "That one was just a little more difficult because … it was a strange one for the doctors to kind of wrap their heads around, so that was a little more nervewracking."

"I talked to the hand guy. He's very confident and everything. So I'm just a little more confident going in."

The D-backs called up outfielder David Peralta from Double-A Mobile on Sunday morning to take Pollock's roster spot.
