Reddick opens rehab stint at Sacramento
A's want outfielder to get knee healthy, get swing back before returning
OAKLAND -- A's right fielder Josh Reddick, sidelined most of this month with a hyperextended right knee, is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday night.
Reddick will serve as the designated hitter for Sacramento's evening contest in Rock Round, Texas, before playing a game in right field for the River Cats.
"After four days, we'll see where he's at," said manager Bob Melvin. "We want him to come back swinging the bat well, and he knows that."
That means Reddick isn't assured of being on the club's charter flight to New York on Monday for the start of an eight-game, 10-day road swing.
He was hitting just .214 at the onset of his injury, and the A's are seemingly in no rush to force a roster move with Stephen Vogt playing so well. Vogt was recalled June 1, and entering Wednesday, he had hit safely in 10 of his 12 games, batting .359.
