A's select Diaz, son of former big leaguer, in 15th round

Edwin Diaz's father, also named Edwin, was a second-round pick in 1993, but the 6-foot-2, 180-pound high schooler from Puerto Rico didn't go as high as his dad did.

The A's selected Diaz with their 15th-round pick of the Draft on Saturday.

Diaz is a reliable defender at short, but scouts are split on whether he can remain at the position due to fringy range and arm strength.

At the plate, he projects to be an average hitter who should add more power as he fills out. Oakland's selection suggests it feels confident that he can play shortstop in the Major Leagues.
