Astros Make Four Selections in 2015 MLB Draft Tonight

Houston selects Cameron, Eshelman in Comp Round A and second round

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have completed their selections tonight by picking outfielder Daz Cameron and right-handed pitcher Thomas Eshelman in Day 1 of the June 2015 First-Year Player Draft. Cameron was selected with the first pick in the Competitive Balance Round A (#37 overall) and Eshelman was selected in the second round (#46 overall).

Cameron and Eshelman join a strong draft class so far for Houston, as the club selected shortstop Alex Bregman and outfielder Kyle Tucker with the second and fifth overall picks in the first round earlier tonight.

Cameron, 18, hit .455 (35x77) with 10 doubles, eight home runs, 17 stolen bases and 32 RBI during his senior year at Eagle's Landing Christian Academy High School in Atlanta, Ga. Among all players, Cameron entered the draft ranked by Baseball America as the No. 5 prospect available. The right-handed hitting outfielder was Georgia's Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year and led his high school baseball team to the state playoffs in all four of his varsity seasons.

Daz is the son of Mike Cameron, who played center field in the Majors for 17 years, a career in which he played for eight teams. The Astros received the 37th overall pick, which was used on Cameron, in last year's trade with the Marlins that also netted Houston outfielder Jake Marisnick and two minor leaguers: right-handed pitcher Francis Martes and third baseman Colin Moran.

Eshelman, 21, has gone 8-5 with a save and a 1.58 ERA (23ER/131.2IP) in 18 games (17 starts) for Cal State Fullerton this season. His lone save on the season came earlier tonight, as he pitched a scoreless 10th inning in Fullerton's 4-3 win over Louisville, which advanced them to the College World Series. An extreme control pitcher, Eshelman recorded 131 strikeouts and issued only seven walks in his 131.2 innings pitched this season.

A standout college performer in his three seasons at Fullerton, Eshelman was named the Big West Conference Pitcher of the Year and to the Big West Conference First Team this season. He was also named to the Louisville Slugger All-American First Team.

After tonight, the draft will resume tomorrow (rounds 3-10) and Wednesday (rounds 11-40), with tomorrow's selections starting at noon CT and Wednesday's commencing at 11 a.m. CT. MLB.com will stream all 40 rounds of the 2015 Draft.

Astros Amateur Scouting Director Mike Elias will be made available after the Astros final selections tomorrow (approx. 4:45 p.m.) and on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) in the lobby of Union Station at Minute Maid Park.
