Astros sign fourth-round pick Ruiz
HOUSTON, TX -- The Houston Astros announced today the signing of infielder Rio Ruiz, who they selected in the fourth round in the 2012 MLB First Year Player Draft. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Astros Assistant General Manager/Director of Scouting Bobby Heck made the official announcement.
Ruiz, 18, took batting practice with the Astros Major League club at Minute Maid Park after signing the contract. He was signed by Astros area scout Tim Costic.
Ruiz hit .455 (46x101) with 14 doubles, three home runs and 35 RBI and led his team to a sectional championship in his junior season at Bishop Amat High School (California) in 2011. He entered the 2012 season as a Rawlings First-Team All-American and was projected as a first-round pick in the 2012 Draft. Ruiz slipped to the fourth round after missing most of his senior year because of a blood clot in his right clavicle.
Ruiz worked out with the Astros Major League club this afternoon without any physical difficulties. He will report to Kissimmee, FL, on Tuesday.
