Phegley out of action with concussion
A's catcher to undergo tests after taking bat to head during BP on Friday; Vogt nearing return
HOUSTON -- Athletics catcher Josh Phegley -- who was scratched from Friday's 4-3 win over the Astros -- suffered a freak injury during batting practice before the game and has a concussion, manager Bob Melvin said.
Melvin said Phegley was hit in the back of the head with a bat while standing around the batting cage area. When he was scratched about an hour before game time, the club officially said it was because of an "illness."
Phegley was at Minute Maid Park for Saturday's game, but Melvin said he could be unavailable for several days given he has to pass the concussion test before he would be cleared to play.
Phegley joins fellow catcher Stephen Vogt -- who suffered a groin injury on Sept. 6 -- on the injury report. Vogt went through full pregame work on Friday and Saturday and could play Sunday, according to Melvin.
Carson Blair, who caught Friday's game and went 1-for-4 with a single, was behind the plate Saturday.
