Big college bat Thomasson to KC in Round 9

The Royals got one of the more prolific power hitters in college baseball this season, taking outfielder Brandon Thomasson in the ninth round (273rd overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft on Friday.

The four-year Tennessee Tech product finished second in Division I in home runs this season with 22. Thomasson batted .337 with four triples and 20 doubles, and his .721 slugging percentage, also ranked second in DI. He clubbed 46 extra-base hits in 58 games.

"Twenty-two home runs in this game with the bats that they have, we'll take power any time we can get it," Royals director of scouting Lonnie Goldberg said.

Thomasson's monster season earned him a spot on Collegiate Baseball magazine's All-America list.

Thomasson stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 215 pounds. He was the third outfielder selected by the Royals on Day 2 of the Draft.

The Draft concludes on Saturday, with exclusive coverage of Rounds 11-40 beginning on MLB.com at noon CT.
