Bloomquist's swollen hand keeps him from action

WASHINGTON -- D-backs infielder Willie Bloomquist hoped his left hand would feel better when he woke up Thursday morning, but instead, it was still pretty swollen.

Bloomquist was hit on the hand by a Tyler Clippard pitch Wednesday night, and while initial X-rays were negative, he was unavailable to hit or play in the field for Thursday's game.

"Not good," Bloomquist said. "I was hoping for a lot better. It's pretty sore today, so we'll just get a bunch of treatment on it and try to get on top of it. It's throbbing, it's got its own heartbeat. It was tough to button my shirt this morning with it. Obviously, there's quite a bit of pain there today."

Second baseman Aaron Hill was hit on the left hand by a pitch in April, and while X-rays were negative, a CT scan would later reveal a fracture.

"Right now, the test results were as good as they could be, so it's just a matter of treating it and getting ahead of things, and if it doesn't get any better in the next couple of days, then we'll go from there," Bloomquist said. "Optimistic that hopefully it will [get better]."

The D-backs will wait for the swelling to go down before evaluating whether Bloomquist will need to undergo further testing on the hand.
