Gibbons comes out a winner on challenge

ARLINGTON -- Blue Jays manager John Gibbons came out on the winning end of a crucial replay during the seventh inning of Sunday afternoon's game vs the Rangers.

Texas had runners at second and third with one out in the seventh inning when Michael Choice hit a sharp liner to third base. Toronto's Juan Francisco took a quick step to his right to make the grab and his momentum carried him toward the bag at third.

Francisco then made a stabbing dive to third base as Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos attempted to go in with a head-first slide. Third-base umpire Dale Scott called Chirinos safe but Gibbons used a challenge after taking a couple of steps onto the field.

The replays showed that Francisco's glove touched the bag for a force out just before Chirinos touched the base. The call on the field was then overturned following a review of two minutes and 57 seconds.

The ruling marked the fifth time this season the Blue Jays have won a challenge. The timing of this one was rather crucial as it ended the inning and kept Toronto within two runs.
