Blue Jays, Gibbons lose challenge
Out call at first confirmed after Cabrera stumbled out of batter's box
TORONTO -- The Blue Jays continue to experience some difficulty adjusting to the new instant replay rules as manager John Gibbons lost another challenge on Thursday night.
The play in question came on a ground ball by Melky Cabrera during the fifth inning. Cabrera hit a grounder to third but tripped coming out of the box while third baseman Matt Dominguez bobbled the ball. That created a close play at first base, but umpire Gabe Morales ruled Cabrera out.
Gibbons came out to argue the call and after getting a thumbs up from the dugout he decided to challenge. Replay later showed that Cabrera arrived at first base a split second too late and the call on the field was confirmed.
Toronto is now 0-for-3 this season on challenges and 0-for-6 dating back to Spring Training. The most recent incident came just one day after the Blue Jays declined to challenge another disputed call when Ryan Goins was picked off first base.
Gibbons came out to argue that call as well but got the thumbs down from the dugout and decided not to issue a challenge. Replay later showed that Goins got his hand back to the bag before a tag was applied.
