Blue Jays likely done with big acquisitions

Club made moves early this offseason to add pitching

TORONTO -- Tony LaCava has made a couple of additions to the Blue Jays' pitching staff this offseason, but the club's interim general manager might have to get creative if he wants to make another major move.

Toronto has approximately $135 million tentatively committed to its 25-man roster for next season. The Blue Jays do not release their payroll parameters to the public, but it's expected to be in a similar range compared to 2015.

The Blue Jays began last season with a payroll of approximately $125 million, but that number was raised close to $140 million after midseason trades for David Price, Ben Revere, Mark Lowe and Troy Tulowitzki.

If Toronto has similar funds to work with next year, there isn't a lot of additional room to make a major move. The Blue Jays could create some payroll flexibility by either trading or non-tendering Revere and his projected $6.9 million salary, while another option would be back loading a contract to a free agent.

With the Winter Meetings coming soon (Dec. 7-10), the club is still in the market for a utility infielder, at least one quality reliever, a starter and then additional depth options to stash in the upper levels of the Minor Leagues.

"We're going to continue to look, but we feel like we're off to a good start with bringing back Marco [Estrada], J.A. [Happ] is a really significant signing for us, and then being able to get Jesse [Chavez] as well," LaCava told reporters during a conference call on Saturday afternoon.

"There was a bit of an urgency to do it. We identified the guys we felt fit what we were looking to do, and fortunately we were able to get some things done."
