Blue Jays sign 1st round picks
The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have signed 9th overall selection RHP JEFF HOFFMAN and 11th overall selection C MAX PENTECOST. This brings the total number of players signed from the 2014 First Year Player Draft to 27, including 10 picks from the top 10 rounds.
HOFFMAN, 21, made 10 starts this season with East Carolina posting a 3-3 record with a 2.94 ERA, including 72 strike outs in 67.1 innings. In three seasons Hoffman allowed just 212 hits in 250.2 innings. The right-hander had his final season cut short due to injury and required Tommy John surgery on May 14 and will miss the 2014 season.
PENTECOST, 21, led Kennesaw State to an NCAA Super Regional appearance, while leading the nation in hits with 113 and finishing 2nd with a .422 average, both A-Sun and school records. On Thursday, the Winder Georgia native was selected as the recipient of the Johnny Bench Award honouring the top catcher in the nation. Past winners include Buster Posey and Kurt Suzuki. His memorable season continued off a Cape Cod Summer League MVP performance where he batted .336 with six home runs in 38 games.
