• Yankees infielder Kevin Youkilis hit tee-and-toss on Wednesday in Tampa, according to Girardi. Youkilis has been on the DL with a lumbar spine sprain since April 30, retroactive to April 28.

• Mariano Rivera recorded his 16th save on Tuesday in the Yankees' 39th game of the season. It marks the fewest number of team games needed to reach 16 saves in his career; Rivera's previous best was 45 team games, in 2004.

• On this date in 1941, Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak began with a single off Eddie Smith in a 13-1 loss to the White Sox at Yankee Stadium.
